Salona (near Split Croatia)
Originally an Illyrian city, Salona got involved in the Illyrian wars with Rome. After the city supported Julius Caesar in the civil war against Pompeius, the victorious Caesar granted the city the status of Roman colony: Colonia Martia Iulia Salona
When in later in the 3rd century ad the first Roman bishop Venantius came to Salona he had churches built. When emperor Valerius tried to return to the Roman values and gods, Venantius was executed.
