Gaius who was with his father in Germany between the legionaries, was give the nick name Caligula (little soldier's boot) when his mother had dressed him up as a legionnaire. Because of his popularity with the soldiers he became emperor when the very impopular Tiberius had died. He was in fact too young to have much natural imponderance over the senate.
