Tarpeian rock



This steep cliff at one side of the Capitol hill played an important role in the ancient republic. A name to remember here is M. Manlius Capitolinus. He earned that cognomen (nickname) by chasing off the Gauls when the Capitol was besieged. Later when he became too popular with the populace he was hurled from this same rock
