Baths of Caracalla

In 212 emperor Caracalla ordered the construction of the huge bathing complex. 6000 workers needed five years just to level the hilly terraces into one platform. The complex was inaugurated in 216 ad, but finished in 217. Bathing was very important in Rome and in fact the most water used in Rome went into the baths. The water for this complex was brought in by the "Aqua Marcia" aqueduct. In these baths were placed the enormous and famous statues of Punishment of Dirce (Farnesian bull) and Hercules (of Farnese); both now in the archeological museum in Napoli
