Explore the Roman republic

This page is the start point for exploring the Roman republic. You'll find here all the consuls, but also the dictators and their masters of the horse. Likewise the military tribune with consular power are placed in the proper year. Next to these officials you'll find the most important wars and events; under the links you'll find my comments. In the last column are listed the authors who have described that particular episode and link you to the relevant text. You'll see this list grow in the coming months.

The dictators who were appointed solely to organize an election are not mentioned in this table.
Where ever  possible the master of the horse (Magister Equitem M.E.) is also stated.
In the period from 444 to 367 often military tribunes with consular power were elected instead of consuls.
If a consul died (or resigned) in his period in office, he had to be replaced, the successors (suffects) in the same year are stated below his name.
Due to irregularities with the Roman calendar the dates before 300 bc are not too trustworthy.

The links in the right column will show you the relevant ancient texts. The abbreviations:
Liv = T. Livius; Dion = Dionysius of Halicarnassus; Plut.=Plutarchus; Cas=Cassius Dio;
Diod= Diodorus Siculus
