Sarcophagus with the myth of Theseus and Ariadne



On the upper part cupids drive chariots drawn by animals associated with the four seasons. The lower part shows three scenes of the myth. Left Ariadne gives Theseus a ball of wool so he can find his way back out of the labyrinth. Middle Theseus fights and kills the Minotaurus (half man half bull) Right: After Theseus has escaped with the children; he sails awayaway. On his way to Athens he leaves Ariadne on the island of Naxos. Here Dionysus will find her later.
